Territoire intime, territoire social ?

High school in the eyes of high school students.

This place where... living together, in harmony or unwillingly. Learning about life in community, sometimes clashing with others, feeling misunderstood.

This place where constraint is often the rule, where daily life is punctuated by a division of time, a repetition of movements and codifications.

The impression sometimes expressed by schoolchildren of fatigue, boredom and routine. Generations of teenagers come and go, living in the strongly connoted place that is secondary school, associated with learning, but also with an obligatory territory, in which there are places of gathering, of passage, of prohibitions.

What if high school became a territory of poetry, invention and play?

The pupils in year 9 at Jean Moulin high school are involved in a project on the subject of high school.

Six locations had been selected beforehand; then, one had to be picked and the work had to be designed to reveal the identity of the chosen location, seen as a territory.

Work in situ, two-dimensional work or in volume? The creative process was initiated by associations of ideas and words.

Intimate territory, social territory?

The students had the choice to work alone or in groups, which leads to an initial reflection: "Where do I fit into the community?”

From the outset of this first choice, a respectful look at this first initiative had to be imposed, which had to make sense, questioning the relationship to the other and to oneself.

Second reflection: "What is the identity of my territory?”

Sometimes, inspiration came from an encounter between an artist's work and the characteristics of the considered space, leading to a search that is both sensitive and poetic.

Sometimes the inspiration simply came from the students’ real life experience in the given place that was to be staged, disguised by the creative process.

The passage from the banal to the extraordinary happened through plastic operations that have modified our view of a place so that we recognise it as a singular territory, with its limits (hermetic or permeable), its accessibility or its isolation.

The process also initiated a posture of the students towards their territory; each of them gave themselves a role, a fictitious identity.

"Establishing our territory is almost the birth of Art".

G. Deleuze, Abécédaire.

This project was nourished by a powerful encounter with Pierre De Vallombreuse, a photographer who is interested in the intimate relationship between man and his environment, reflecting on what he calls sustainable humanity.

At Lendroit éditions, the students met passionate professionals who took a kind and interested look at their creations, however modest they may be, and brought them to light in this artist's book.

Last thing we can do is wish you a good trip to Jean Moulin High School in St Jacques De La Landes.
