BOP #14 - version non pliée - Kuroshio, porites, temp 21.1°, pH 8.097, pCO2 337, Kikaijima, Avril 2017, Leg Japon, Tara Pacific, 2017

The underwater world has become a recurrent element in Nicholas Floc’h’s work since 2008, when he discovered the submerged architecture of artificial reefs used in halieutic research and in the renewal of aquatic ecosystems. Since then, he has made reproductions of them in sculptural forms of one-tenth their original size, documenting the original cement constructions before they are immersed in water. The artist also goes on diving expeditions to photograph the actual reefs after their colonisation by aquatic flora and fauna. The time he spent in residence between Tokyo and Chi-Lung aboard the schooner Tara allowed him to expand his research into natural architecture and the coral reefs found along with the “black current” (from the Japanese Kuroshio).

As part of the exhibition Kuroshio, the black current (7 September to 7 October 2017) Lendroit éditions proposes a photograph of Porites corals that the artist took around the island of Kikaijima. These massive coral formations grow a mere centimetre each year and can live for several centuries. From a scientific point of view, these corals are an important natural resource and often form natural levees. The study of their skeletons allows us to take into account the traces left by climate change over the last 50 to 100 years. The photograph also incarnates the intriguing strangeness of the underwater world.
