Between 1967 and 1968, John Baldessari (National City, California. 1931) carried out a project entitled "National City" in his home town. He drives through the streets, taking the photographs from the front seat of his car with a 35mm camera. The photographs are accompanied by what Baldessari calls "Phototext" which tells us the exact geographical location of the shot.

Today, advances in technology and computing and the advent of Google Street View (GSV) in 2007 have revolutionised the exploration of the world, offering a representation of it through images whose apparent objectivity invites us to believe in photography as we have always believed.

Thanks to GSV, we are given the opportunity to visit the places that Baldessari has photographed. The journey is instantaneous and one almost manages to create a familiar relationship with these places that are so far away.

Welcome to National City is a virtual journey to National City, composed of 12 "Phototext". These images reveal the presence of anachronistic objects condemned to survive in a present that is no longer relevant. A journey in which the most advanced technology available to man rubs shoulders with the immobility of time.
